Wrestling is a growing sport in Thailand and wider Southeast Asia, capturing a diverse audience with its unique combination of technique and strength.
The Thai Wrestling Association is gearing up for a busy season with several events scheduled over the coming months. Increasing in popularity and reach, wrestling has become a popular sport in the Kingdom both on a professional and a recreational level. The sport has greatly benefited from Thailand hosting five Asian Games, which promotes the sport to a wide audience. The Kingdom currently has more than 80 wrestling clubs, a sign of a growing organisation and popularity across the country.
On 6-11 July the Asian Junior Championships will take place in Bangkok and a few weeks later, on 28 July to 4 August, Trang will host the Wrestling and Beach Wrestling Championships Thailand 2021. On 4-10 September, the South East Asian Wrestling Festival will take place in Buriram.
A highly technical sport, wrestling dates back several thousands of years with evidence that ancient populations such as the Sumerians, Egyptians and the Greek practiced the sport. In fact, wrestling is one of the oldest Olympic disciplines, dating back to the Ancient Olympic Games from 708 BC.
Wrestling is also part of the 6th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games organised by the Olympic Council of Asia, which will take place from 10-20 March 2022, postponed due to COVID-19.
