Covering key topics such as event hosting and bidding, economic impact, sports tourism, sporting impact and event analysis, the GSI Report 2017 sheds light on the world of global sports events.
The third edition of the GSI Report 2017 has arrived. Published by SportsCal, one of the world's leading providers of sports market intelligence, the report covers 317 sports events in over 86 nations from 2013 to 2016 and provides valuable insight for governing bodies, rights holders, event organisers, governing agencies, NGO's, sponsors, broadcasters and service providers.
In terms of event hosting and bidding, data from the 2013-2016 cycle suggests that nations in Europe will continue to see their overall share of events decline, while North America has increased its share of events over the period. With the Olympic Games in 2024 or 2028 likely to be held in North America, the report foresees the trend to continue. USA came out as the number one Global Sports Nation while London once again was named as number one Global Sports City.
More than 54 million spectators attended the 317 events analysed, the report shows, with 16 million attending events in 2016 alone. Attendance at 56 of the leading annual sports properties declined 0.27 percent during the 2015/2016 season compared to the previous year. The report furthermore provides insight into and analysis of 70 multi-sport games, using 40 data indicators covering economic, sporting, media and social impact
Sport tourism and sporting impact
The report estimates that for the 70 multi-sport games analysed in depth, participants and media alone took up more than 1.5 million bed nights in the host cities, resulting in a direct economic impact of $303 million before a single ticket was sold. In addition, spectator-generated spend for the 70 events is estimated at $2.9 billion. According to the event, that translates into a $3.2 billion direct economic impact for the host cities and nations in 2016.
Despite more than 230,000 athletes attending the events analysed in the GSI Report 2017, the report nevertheless highlights the need in many nations for more development support to compete at a global level. Gender parity is also an issue, with only 41.3 percent of athletes participating in the analysed events being women.
