Paris Saint-Germain, one of the most celebrated sports brands in the world, is launching a new Thai esports team, PSG Esports ROV. The establishment of the team, which will play in the ROV Pro League, (Arena of Valor (AOV), one of the most popular Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) games in the country), marks an important milestone in the brand’s expansion in Asia.
Enjoying huge success in Asia and especially in Thailand, AOV has a large and growing following, with the ROV Pro League competitions owned and run in Thailand by video game developer and publisher Garena. Founded in 2018 the league is the largest, most professional and longest running in Thailand.
Paris Saint-Germain has a long history of football success and is the most decorated club in France. The club recently gained further traction when it was announced that Lionel Messi would be moving to the club. With a huge global following - and already 15,000 new followers in Thailand for the new Esports team - the club is a pioneer in the world of esports, having entered the scene back in 2016.
Entering into the ROV Pro League, Paris Saint Germain will insert itself into one of the most popular mobile esports games in Thailand, with more than 4.5 million Facebook followers and more than 3.1 million downloads on Google Play and 1 million downloads on Apple’s App Store in the country alone (HOK, the Chinese version of the Game owned by Tencent is the biggest Mobile Game in China with 100 million daily users). The game is especially popular amongst teens and young adults with approximately 85 percent of players aged below 25 years.
The team has big ambitions for Thailand and beyond and will be competitive from day 1. The team will be made up of five first-team Thai players and will be based in Bangkok at the Hubber HQ where they will train and play. The team also recently signed a partnership agreement with Hubber.gg, the Gamers Hub for the Gaming/Esports Community in Thailand and there are opportunities to leverage this association as well for joint partnerships.
